Connecting Rocketbots to SMS messaging via MessageBird.

MessageBird is a cloud communications platform that connects you to your global customers. Through their webservice APIs, you can send and receive SMS text messages via a virtual phone number.

Setting Up MessageBird

In order to connect MessageBird to your Space, you will need the following:

Purchasing a Virtual Number

Note that you will have to top up your MessageBird account in order to purchase a Virtual Number.

Navigate to the MessageBird dashboard. If you are not already signed in, you may have to log in with your MessageBird account first.

On the sidebar, select "Numbers". On the Numbers page, select the blue "Buy a Number" button on the top right. This should open a new dialog.

For the Country field, you may want to pick a country where most of your contacts will be located. Select the number capabilities that you need. However, be sure that your number will be able to support SMS.

Finally, select a phone number from the dropdown menu and the duration for which you want to pay now.

Press the blue "Next" button when you have selected your desired phone number and confirm your purchase.

Your virtual phone number most have SMS compatibility to work with Rocketbots.

Connecting to MessageBird

To add a new channel to an existing Space, navigate to Settings and select the blue "Add Channel" button under Channel Settings.

Under the Channel Connection menu, select the MessageBird logo and press the blue "Next" button.

Once you have done so, you should be asked for the Channel Name, Greeting Message, and other fields specific to MessageBird.

Connecting to MessageBird on the Rocketbots Platform

Enter a suitable name for the new channel. Note that the Channel Name is private and will only be used within the Rocketbots Platform.

You may enter an optional Greeting Message. This will be shown when a new member of your audience first contacts you.

MessageBird Phone Number

In the MessageBird Phone Number field, enter the virtual phone number that you purchased from MessageBird.

If you do not remember the number, you can navigate to the Numbers page on the MessageBird dashboard. Here, you can find a list of all of your virtual numbers.


On the MessageBird Dashboard, you will have to navigate to the API Access page under Developers. Navigate to the Developers page by selecting "Developers" on the sidebar.

Under the Developers page, select the "API access" tab.

On the API Access page, select "Show Key" of your desired access key. Copy and paste the key into the API Key field on the Rocketbots Platform.

Connecting to the Platform

Once you have filled in the fields on the Rocketbots Platform, you will have to paste the Webhook URL into MessageBird.

On the MessageBird dashboard, navigate to the Flow Builder page by selecting "Flow Builder" on the sidebar.

Under the Flow Builder page, select the "Call HTTP endpoint with SMS" flow under the list of Templates by pressing the "Try this flow" button.

This will create the a new flow with the template in the MessageBird Flow Builder.

In your new flow, select the "SMS" bubble. In the SMS menu, choose the SMS-enabled virtual number that you have previously purchased on MessageBird.

Once you have made the changes to the SMS bubble, press the blue "Save" button.

Next, select the "Forward to URL" bubble. For the "Method" field, select the "POST" option. For the URL, copy and paste the Webhook URL from the Rocketbots Platform into the field.

Once you have pasted the URL press the blue "Save" button.

Once you have made these changes, press the blue "Publish" button on the top right of the Flow Builder.

Return to the Rocketbots Platform and press the blue "Done" button. Your Space will now be connected to your MessageBird virtual phone!

All future SMS messages sent to your virtual phone number will appear on the Rocketbots Platform.
